What it is

A straightener about the size of a fat pen, with ceramic-coated floating plates that follow the hair instead of dragging on it. It straightens and it curls — you wrap the ends around the barrel rather than clamping straight through. It runs off USB, so it charges from the same things your phone charges from.

Good for: Touching up a fringe, flattening the pieces that have dropped by lunchtime, curling the ends before you go out, and packing for a weekend without carrying a full-size iron.

Not for you if: You want to straighten a full head of thick or coarse hair from scratch. The plates are narrow [confirm mm] and it will take a long time. Buy a full-size iron for that and keep this one in your bag.

What it won't do: It won't straighten a whole head of thick hair quickly, and it won't hold a style through rain or a gym session any better than a full-size iron. It's for touch-ups and small sections. Heat styling of any kind is hard on hair — use it on the pieces that need it, not on all of it every day.
How to use it
  • Start with hair that is completely dry. Heat on damp hair damages it and the style won't hold.
  • Slide the switch on, wait for the indicator light [confirm whether the light means "on" or "ready" — people burn themselves on that difference], and rest it on a heatproof surface while it warms.
  • Work in small sections, about the width of the plates. Clamp near the root and draw it down in one steady movement.
  • To curl: clamp a section, rotate the barrel away from your face, and pull through slowly. Let the curl cool in your hand before you let go — cooling is what sets it.
  • Hold the cool tip, not the body. The plates and the metal around them get hot and stay hot.
  • Don't leave it switched on unattended.
